If the cough does not go away, Beware of Chronic Lung Disease

Do not assume trivial if you have a
cough that will not go away. The
coughing can be symptoms of
chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease (COPD), which causes the
flow of air from the lungs is
inhibited. "Symptoms of COPD
chronic cough, can not heal more
than three weeks," said dr. Jamal
Zaini, SpP (K), at the Friendship
Hospital, Jakarta, Wednesday
(16/11/2016).

The cough is usually accompanied
by phlegm or mucus. But there are
also experiencing a dry cough.
Other symptoms that often arises,
namely chronic tightness. Patients
easier shortness of breath and
lasts a long time. For example, a
new walk 100 meters already feels
claustrophobic, be aware there is a
problem in the lungs.

Unfortunately, the symptoms often
appear after lung damage has
occurred. These symptoms should
not be ignored. Especially if you
have a major risk factor of
developing COPD is smoking.
"Patients with COPD. 90 percent
are smokers," said Jamal.

Smoking causes carcinogenic
substances in tar get into the
respiratory tract. Slowly, tar can
damage lung tissue and lead to
COPD. Jamal said the condition of
the lungs in patients with COPD
can not be reversed if the lungs
have been damaged and a decline
in lung function.

In addition to medical treatment, a
patient can do is to reduce
exposures, for example to stop
smoking and avoid frequent
exposure to air pollution. If it
remains determined to smoking,
lung function decline will occur
more quickly than those who do
not smoke. In fact, patients are
also at risk of developing lung
cancer.

Coinciding with the World Chronic
Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
which this year falls on November
16, the public is expected to be
familiar with this disease so that
more care to maintain lung health.
