Jakarta government policy to
provide vaccines for cervical
cancer to the fifth grade
elementary school in Jakarta for
free should be appreciated. As a
cancer that causes most deaths in
women, cervical cancer can
actually be prevented by
vaccination. Unfortunately, the
price of the vaccine is relatively
expensive, Rp 1.2 million per
syringe, and takes two to three
doses, make not many people are
willing to spend money to pay for
the vaccine.
Cervical cancer vaccine is not yet
included in national immunization
programs of the government.
However, participants of the
National Health Insurance can
make early detection of this
disease using VIA (Visual
Inspection Acetic Acid) in health
centers for free. According to WHO
data, cervical cancer is the cancer
most likely to cause death in
women aged 15-45 years. No
fewer than 500,000 new cases with
280,000 deaths occur each year
people all over the world. That
said, every two minutes a woman
dies from cervical cancer.
Cervical cancer is known to be
caused due to infection with the
human papilloma virus (HPV)
types 16 and 18. HPV lives in the
skin's surface, including the outer
skin. About 85 percent of cervical
cancers occur because of sexual
contact. Therefore, frequently
changing partners or having sex
increases the risk of HPV
infection.
Primary prevention of this disease
is to avoid risky sexual encounter
and undergo HPV immunization.
Moreover, the effectiveness of HPV
immunization protection in
preventing cancer is quite high. A
number of countries have entered
the HPV vaccine in the national
immunization program for school
students aged 10-12 years, such
as Australia and several countries
in Europe. Malaysia also provides
the vaccine free of charge.
Giving early favorable because at
that age usually have either not
had sexual intercourse and is also
important in the age of the
formation of antibodies after
immunization is very high.
Cervical cancer is characterized
symptoms, namely vaginal
discharge, spontaneous bleeding
or bleeding after sexual contact,
and pelvic pain. In the early
stages, can be asymptomatic.
Thus, early detection by VIA and
Pap smears in women who had
sexual intercourse, is highly
recommended.
