Experts from The Royal College of
Midwives, who also study
presented in the Journal of
Physiology, urged pregnant women
to choose a side sleeping position
to minimize the risk of infant death
in the womb.
It refers to the results of a study
which found that the supine
sleeping position can reduce the
oxygen supply to the baby in the
womb.
The greatest risk due to sleeping
on your back is in the last three
months of pregnancy or third
trimester.
Scientists from New Zealand found
that baby's heart rate and oxygen
intake is reduced when a pregnant
woman lying on her back even if
only for 30 minutes. They warn, it
could increase the chance that the
baby died.

Midwifery Director Louise
Silverton said, "Pregnant women
are advised not to sleep on their
backs. We have found that
sleeping on your back in a long
time can make the blood pressure
is reduced. Even for a healthy
pregnancy, taking a safe sleeping
position is very important."
Silverton recommends that doctors
and midwives advise pregnant
women to take positions that are
not only comfortable, but safe
during sleep, including while lying
on the couch.
Prof. Peter Stone, who was
involved in previous research
saying, "Lie on your back can add
extra stress to the baby,
contributing to the risk of stillbirth.
Research has shown that sleep
tilted to the left improves the flow
of nutrients to the uterus."
